Copyright and the Library’s Collections
The National Library of Wales acknowledges and respects the rights that subsist in the collections in our care. Digital content that is made available for commercial use by the digiDo project is managed in such a way as to ensure that businesses are made aware of their rights status prior to its use.
Digital content will fall into one of three categories:
- Public Domain (i.e. out of copyright)
- Unknown copyright status
- In copyright
Whichever category an item or collection belongs, the Library may be able to assist your business. We may be able to share our knowledge and experience of rights management or perhaps put you in contact with the relevant rights holder so that you can discuss with them the development of your proposed product or service.
Licensing digital content
digiDo had enabled businesses that were eligible to benefit from the project to make commercial use of digital content free of charge. If the business met the requirements of the project, the standard rights fees that are charged by the Library were waived.
In order to benefit from this opportunity, the business had to meet the project’s requirements:
- Exist as a business or individual within the convergence area’s of Wales
- attend one of the introductory sessions hosted by the Library
- identify which content you would like to use and describe how you intend to use it
Each application was then assessed against the project’s aims and objectives.
